I’m the research director of Public Citizen’s Trump Accountability Project. I investigate how Donald Trump turns political power into personal profit. My work draws on public records, FOIA requests, open-source intelligence (OSINT), campaign finance data, and human sources.
Previously, at Forbes, where I worked as an investigative reporter focused on money in politics for five years, I published around 350 articles, with reporting that’s been cited by Congress, government watchdogs, and international media outlets.
“Zach is always a must read on Trump’s crypto schemes. He doesn’t just say what’s happening, he explains it clearly.”
– Heather Cox Richardson, historian and publisher of Letters from an American
Prior to Forbes, I reported on Trump’s business interests for ProPublica, Vanity Fair, Politico, Slate, Mother Jones, NBC News, and The Daily Beast. My newsletter 1100 Pennsylvania chronicled high-profile activity at Trump’s D.C. hotel, earning citations in congressional reports, ethics complaints, and international media coverage.
In 2019, I won the Lowell Thomas Gold Award for Travel News/Investigative Reporting from the Society of American Travel Writers for “Inside the World’s Most Controversial Hotel” for Condé Nast Traveler.
“Everson was a tremendous resource for me and for any Washington reporter attempting to capture the Trump-era swamp in all of its decadent contours.”
– Mark Leibovich in Thank You for Your Servitude
I’m committed to exposing the truth and holding those in power accountable.
Before focusing on politics, I covered food and travel, writing for Eater, Lonely Planet, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, USA Today, Fodor’s, and AOL. I live just outside Washington, D.C., and enjoy cheering on the Washington Spirit with my wife and kids.
